“Over a few hours, during yesterday, I decided it was best to have him examined in the hospital after discovering a slight pulmonary issue,” his personal doctor Alberto Zangrillo told the media in a statement.

“Berlusconi was kept in because he is at risk due to his age and previous pathologies, but it is a comfortable setting. He is in an isolated room, but the patient is not intubated, so he is breathing autonomously. There was an early stage infection in the lungs, but we caught it very early and it is being treated. We expect him to be in hospital for a few days.

“I am optimistic for the progress of the situation over the next few days. I prescribed only absolute rest, which was not easy to convince him to follow, so he’s not in the best mood!”

There were reports Berlusconi was suffering from an early stage of pneumonia, which can be a dangerous complication of COVID-19.

Berlusconi’s 84th birthday is on September 29.
