Ranieri leaves U21 squad

Fiorentina defender Luca Ranieri has left the Italy U21 squad, replaced by Luca Pellegrini for Tuesday’s match in Sweden.

The Azzurrini started the season with a 2-1 friendly win over Slovenia, but begin competition proper with the European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Coach Paolo Nicolato reduced his squad to 23 players going into the trip to Kalmar, where they will fly out tomorrow morning.

Ranieri has left due to injury, but is replaced by Juventus full-back Pellegrini, who steps in from the senior Italy squad.

Italy are currently second in their Euro qualifying group on four wins and a draw, scoring 15 goals and not conceding any yet.

The group leaders are the Republic of Ireland, who have played two more games than the Azzurrini.
