Paulo Fonseca continued to work with the three-man defence, a system he started using during the closing months of last season, but with Bryan Cristante at centre-back and Mkhitaryan a makeshift centre-forward.
It was a strong start, as Rick Karsdorp completed a give-and-go with Pellegrini to fire in, then Cengiz Under sprung the offside trap to score on Gianluca Mancini’s pass.
Pellegrini turned goal-scorer on 36 minutes when running on to a Mkhitaryan through ball to beat the goalkeeper from a tight angle.
However, Pellegrini then added his second assist of the game by returning the favour for Mkhitaryan.
Antonio Mirante made his comeback after recovering from COVID-19, but was immediately beaten by Federico Dionisi’s header at the back post.
Roger Ibanez went off with a knock to the foot, while Under forced a save and Diego Perotti wasted a promising opportunity.
