Cagliari director Pierluigi Carta confirms Inter defender Diego Godin ‘wants to join us, but the negotiations are not easy,’ while Genoa intercepted for Lennart Czyborra.
Reports emerged on Thursday that Godin had practically sealed his transfer to Sardinia, but it seems there’s still some way to go.
“Godin is a player who needs no introduction and therefore isn’t just of interest to us, but to many clubs,” Cagliari director of sport Carta said in today’s press conference.
“There was an approach with him and his entourage. The player wants to join us, but clearly the negotiations are not easy. We’re in the early stages, but if the conditions were to be right, then it’d be a big opportunity for us in terms of leadership and experience.”
The centre-back joined Inter as a free agent last summer from Atletico Madrid, but has struggled to fit into Antonio Conte’s three-man defence.
There are reports he could terminate the contract early in order to join Cagliari, or that it’ll be a loan with option to buy, but either way the Sardinians will have to share his salary.
Carta also discussed other transfers, such as losing Atalanta wing-back Czyborra to Genoa.
“We had the deal done for Czyborra, but the day before he was due to fly out to Sardinia, he tested positive for COVID-19. In the meanwhile, Genoa stepped into the negotiations and we didn’t want to create a bidding war, so we just let it go.
“We made an approach for Alessandro Tripaldelli, but the talks are still evolving.”
