Giovanni Simeone felt Cagliari ‘did well’ to claim a point against Sassuolo and said the Casteddu are ‘working hard to take important steps’ under Eusebio Di Francesco.
The 25-year-old scored the first goal of the match in the 77th minute, but Mehdi Bourabia’s excellent free kick made sure the two sides started the new season with a point each.
Simeone said Cagliari are ready to ‘suffer’ for the points this season and must continue to be ‘compact’ against tough opponents like the Neroverdi.
“We are working well, all together,” Simeone told the club’s official website. “Above all in the difficult moments, we must suffer as a team.
“Against opponents of this quality, you need to be able to play ball, be compact and remain calm. We did well.”
Simeone hopes to take ‘important steps’ under new coach Eusebio Di Francesco and welcomes ‘important players’ to the Casteddu, as Diego Godin is on the verge of singing with the Sardinians.
“We must follow the coach and work hard every day,” he added. “As always, the club works to improve and continue to take important steps.
“We have to think about what happens on the pitch, if important players arrive, we will be happy. It would mean having other profiles with us to give us a hand.”
The Argentine scored 12 times in Serie A last term and has already opened his account for 2020-21.
“Last year I had a great season, I restarted at my best and I take one game at a time,” he said. “I’m trying to contribute and give my best with the qualities I have.
“The priority is to grow together with the group, I have a coach who teaches me a lot and makes me work on aspects I need to improve."
