Leao has recently returned to the fold after having tested positive for COVID-19 and has missed pre-season training, but Pioli is optimistic the 21-year-old ‘can recover quickly’.

Leao has recently returned to the fold after having tested positive for COVID-19 and has missed pre-season training, but Pioli is optimistic the 21-year-old ‘can recover quickly’.

“I hope to have Leao back as soon as possible,” Pioli said at a press conference. “But it’s difficult to make predictions.

“He is young, so maybe he can recover quickly.”

The former Sporting CP youngster arrived from LOSC Lille for €23m ahead of 2019-20 and scored six goals in 33 games for the Rossoneri.

Pioli believes the centre-forward will step up his game this term and has faith in the Portugal Under-21 international to deliver for Milan.

“He has to put his qualities on the pitch, he has great qualities,” Pioli said. “He must play with the team and make a difference; he can do it.

“Last year was his first season in a different League. I expect convincing evidence from him."
