Lazio forward Ciro Immobile said ‘it’s incredible to have scored more goals’ than his 'role model' Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich.
Immobile, who scored 36 League goals for Lazio in 2019-20, finished above every other striker and therefore picked up the European Golden Boot.
“To win the Gold Boot makes me very proud,” Immobile told German newspaper Bild. “Lewandowski has always been a role model for me.
“If I could vote for the Ballon d’Or, I would give him my vote.”
Immobile brought the European Golden Boot back to Italy for the first time since former Roma captain Francesco Totti won the prize in 2007.
“When it comes to the best No9 in the world, the names Lewandowski, [Luis] Suarez or [Karim] Benzema are always mentioned.
“To be named together with them and to have scored more goals than these forwards is incredible.”
