Cagliari coach Eusebio Di Francesco has confirmed Diego Godin’s will be in the squad against Lazio tomorrow. ‘I don’t know if he will start’.
The former Inter defender signed with the Rossoblu yesterday and Di Francesco admitted he immediately settled in training at Asseminello.
“I give the deal a rating of 10,” Di Francesco said at a press conference. “We really wanted Diego.
“It was almost like a birth but I’m happy he arrived. He confirmed my first impressions.
“He is called up for tomorrow but I still don’t know if he will start the match. He immediately settled with the mechanisms in training today.
“But just that he is already with us, is a great thing.”
The Uruguayan defender had been one of the protagonists at Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone, but Di Francesco is not worried he comes from a different philosophy compared to his own style.
“I think having a player like Diego, who played at a great level and with Simeone, is a great advantage for us.
“He’s a true defender, on the inside, because he can defend his mentality to defend his teammates too.
“Having played against him, I know how good he is. I though he was a defender from the last 30 metres and in, but I changed my mind. He’s complete.”
Di Francesco’s men have a challenging start to the new season, as Lazio and Atalanta follow the 1-1 draw with Sassuolo from the first round of fixtures.
“We are lucky enough to have five changes available, which allow us to modify the set-up during the match,” Di Francesco confessed.
“At right we are working on the condition of [Riccardo] Sottil, on [Gabriele] Zappa and [Paolo] Faragò below. I will try to field the most reliable formation.
“The positive results are fundamental to give value to our work, even though the games may go differently.”
