Simone Inzaghi is refusing to set objectives for Lazio this season but warns his squad ‘must be strengthened’ before the transfer window closes.
Lazio get their 2020-21 campaign under way at Cagliari tomorrow but will be without new striker Vedat Muriqi, who tested positive for COVID-19.
That means only Gonzalo Escalante and goalkeeper Pepe Reina have been added to Inzaghi’s squad for now.
“We’ll be facing a quality side,” he said at a press conference.
“The lads trained well. The game will require team spirit and sacrifice.
“It’s a shame, however, that, besides Reina and Escalante who are ready to give us a helping hand, we’ll start with the same players as we did last season.
“We’re doing everything to improve after the problems we endured in previous seasons. Maybe we would’ve liked to start differently in terms of numbers and fixtures.
“But there’s still time for the transfer market. [President] Lotito also said it wouldn’t be a problem to strengthen this team who, I repeat, must be strengthened because we’re short on numbers.”
The Aquile qualified for the Champions League and won the Supercoppa last season, so what is the coach expecting from his side this time out?
“I don’t set myself objectives. Every season, after the transfer window, we start behind, but I’m confident.
“We’re returning from an exciting journey, between the Supercoppa and return to the Champions League, despite our post-lockdown issues.
“This season will be long and complicated, but there can be no excuses: I want it to be a great year.”
