La Dea began their Serie A season with a 4-2 hammering of Toro this afternoon, as Papu scored a goal and provided two assists.

“Without doubt, the Champions League gave us valuable experience and helped us to grow. We’ll try to maintain that level and bring what we learned to Serie A,” Papu told Sky Sport Italia.

“We know the Scudetto is a very difficult target, as you need at least 90 points. It’s going to be a more balanced league than last season.

“We’ll see where we are towards the end of the campaign, but our idea is always to be in the top seven.”

There were reports Gomez would leave Atalanta, but he turned down a huge offer from Saudi Arabia.

“I am accustomed to these rumours, I’m experienced and know what this period of the transfer market is like, so it doesn’t faze me.”
