Gattuso: 'Napoli must improve'

Gennaro Gattuso insists the 6-0 result did not accurately reflect Napoli’s performance against Genoa and they ‘must improve the balance.’

The Partenopei were utterly dominant, yet the coach was eager to downplay their achievements.

“This result is very harsh and does not reflect the game,” insisted Gattuso on Sky Sport Italia.

“If Piotr Zielinski hadn’t scored 30 seconds after the restart, it would’ve been a very different match. We have to focus on improving and finding the right balance, because we need balance in order to play this type of football.”

Chucky Lozano bagged a brace and seems to be finding his form this season after a difficult adjustment to Serie A.

“I am not giving Lozano any leeway, so he is a different player now. When he arrived, he was not at 100 per cent mentally or physically. He would kick the ball and fall over like a child, now he has strength in his legs.

“I knew Lozano from his days at PSV, he always attacked down the wing, but last season he wasn’t at his best at all. He’s playing now because he’s in good shape.

“The whole team hit rock bottom last year and we still need to be consistent over 90 minutes.”

Osimhen was given his first start in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although it quickly moved back to 4-3-3 after Lorenzo Insigne’s injury.

“We were lacking a player like Osimhen who could attack the space, so again today he didn’t score, but he created the situations that allowed others to score. His teammates are always seeking him out, so we’re very pleased with the way he is helping out.

“Insigne will have tests tomorrow, it was a muscular problem and he felt a pull in the flexor.”

Gattuso was asked about director Cristiano Giuntoli’s comments that Kalidou Koulibaly will probably stay at Napoli, despite PSG and Manchester City interest.

“I hope he remains with us, selfishly speaking, because he gives us so much both in technical terms and as a character. The world has changed because of the pandemic and I realise all clubs need to balance the books. I hope the call won’t arrive, but I’ll be nervous about it until transfer deadline day.”
