The Nazionale made short work of Moldova in this friendly in Florence, even with an experimental line-up to test some new faces, in a 6-0 victory.

“It’s enormously satisfying, a special night, as it’s my first brace with the Nazionale and I did it wearing the captain’s armband,” he told Rai Sport.

“That shows you must never give up, you must learn to wait and good things will come. I’ve been training on my own for a month and I waited for the right moment.

“We’ve proved this is a large squad full of talent, there are many options to choose from, we feel enthusiasm and follow what the coach says. We’re feeling very positive.”

El Shaarawy had been on the verge of a loan move back to Roma on deadline day, but it didn’t go through.

“The Chinese league is stopped until February, so I was eager to play. I was always ready to adapt and accept a return, including in terms of salary, so if the negotiations didn’t finish well, that was not because of me.”

During the second goal, he flung himself at the Manuel Lazzari lob and accidentally got a kick in the face, so was sporting a clear shiner in the post-match interviews.

“It was worth it.”
