Ciccio Caputo joked he’s ‘happy to pay for the beers’ after marking his senior Italy debut with a goal in the 6-0 win over Moldova.
He made history, becoming the oldest ever player to score in his first Italy appearance, aged 33 years and 62 days.
“I’m happy to pay for the beers for everyone,” he joked, referring to his ‘drinking’ goal celebration.
“I can say that making my senior debut for Italy after a long journey and to do it with a goal is the maximum I could’ve asked for. I just want to keep going.”
Giancarlo Rinaldi covered the fascinating story of Caputo’s career, flourishing so late in the day.
“Each of us has our own path that we have to follow. Perhaps I wasn’t able to express my best in those years, and perhaps I loved Bari too much and therefore stayed there too long, but after I left, I started to really release what was within me,” confessed the Sassuolo striker.
Roberto Mancini said that the door is not closed for Caputo to be part of the European Championship squad next summer.
“It’s a very long season in Serie A, I will try to do my best and hope to make it as difficult as possible for the coach. I’ll hope to the end.”
