Domenico Berardi celebrates his first senior Italy goal and admits impending fatherhood has changed him. ‘I’d react too quickly without thinking.’

The Azzurri flattened Moldova 6-0 in a friendly this evening at the Stadio Franchi, their 13th win in the last 14 games.

“The coach asked us to put in a good performance, to continue the work we’ve been doing in recent months and to win for the ranking,” Berardi told RAI Sport.

“It was not an easy night for me, but I tried to take some risks, they didn’t quite come off as well as they do when I’m playing for Sassuolo, but I hope that with time they will become easier.

“The Euros are a huge dream, I hope to get there, but naturally I have to earn it with my performances for Sassuolo and by stepping up when I am called for international duty.”

Berardi was always considered a hothead with a terrible disciplinary record, which was holding his career back at both club and international level.

However, he is about to become a father and reveals that has transformed his outlook.

“I have totally changed. I was much more instinctive in the past, I’d react too quickly without thinking and fall for provocation, but I’ve left that behind me and I think you can see the difference on the pitch too.”
