De Paul stayed in Udine beyond the transfer market and continues to impress with the Friuli, but he admits he wants a return to La Liga one day.

“I would like to return to Spain with the experience, the mentality and the name I now have,” De Paul told Marca. “It’s not something that makes me lose sleep, but it helped me a lot to play there.

“La Liga is beautiful, Spanish football is among the best and, if the circumstances and projects are good, I would like to go back.”

Many clubs were reportedly in for the Argentine, who was linked with a move abroad. The 26-year-old arrived from Valencia in July 2016 and admitted he was told about interest from Atletico Madrid.

“I know there was an interest,” De Paul added. “With a coach like Simeone, it draws my attention. I believe they play the dynamic football that I like.

“Every training session seems like an official match for them. In Argentina we grew up with this attitude.

“It’s an extremely big club, a club who fight for important things and, if it happens one day, I would be happy to go there."
