New Sassuolo signing Maxime Lopez said he decided ‘after five minutes’ talking to Roberto De Zerbi that this was the right move for him. ‘He’s a great tactician.’
The 22-year-old midfielder arrived on loan with option to buy from Olympique Marseille on transfer deadline day.
“I certainly have a strong bond with Marseille, as it’s my hometown club, so I want to thank everyone from the youth team staff to the coach Rudi Garcia and Andre Villas Boas,” he said in his press conference.
“The opportunity arose thanks to the interest of coach De Zerbi. I spoke to him for five minutes on the telephone and already wanted to come here. He’s a great coach and a great tactician. I was struck by the fact we have the same vision of football and I love the way his team plays.
“I also heard great things about him from my friends who play in Serie A.”
That includes a reunion with old friend Jeremie Boga, who was linked with numerous top clubs over the summer, but remained with Sassuolo.
“I’ve known him since I was seven years old, as we played together in the Marseille youth academy. He was already so talented at the time, then he went to Chelsea. He spoke highly of Sassuolo and made it easier for me to choose this move.
“I watched many of their games to prepare for the transfer and I’ve seen the quality of the side. I also watched Italy’s friendly with Moldova and the quality of the three Sassuolo players there, Domenico Berardi, Manuel Locatelli and Francesco Caputo.”
