Gian Piero Gasperini says Atalanta’s defeat at Napoli is a ‘wake ap call’ for his men and that Josip Ilicic’s return to the starting XI is ‘one of the few good news of the day.’

"There is little to explain, Napoli made a first half of high level, our was low. The gap was remarkable. We suffered, we conceded goals that we could avoid,” Gasperini told Sky Sport after La Dea’s 4-1 defeat at the Stadio San Paolo.

“It’s a wake-up call in all respects, technical, tactical, and athletic. Napoli were superior.

“Today was one of those days, we have to learn and see how to recover.

“We were pretty down on all aspects, even in the middle of the pitch we had problems and we went into trouble on some long balls, which is how they built the first two goals.

“We have suffered a lot at the back but probably also for the difficulties in the other departments.

“I never said we are title contenders, we have to play and see what we are capable of doing. There are games like today’s where you face strong attacking forces, if you can contain them, you create the conditions to win. If you concede the first three goals as we did, you’re compromising everything.

Josip Ilicic returned to Atalanta’s XI after several months spent on the sidelines for personal problems.

“That’s one of the few positive news of the day. He has proved to have recovered. He will find the best condition by playing. With a team that supports him, he can return the player that he used to be.”
