Valon Behrami admits he ‘was scared’ after Genoa were struck by a huge COVID-19 outbreak affecting 22 people, including the Swiss international.
There were 17 players who tested positive for Coronavirus at the club, forcing them to postpone their fixture against Torino.
“This is a virus that millions of people contracted, there were over 36,000 deaths in Italy alone,” Behrami told Sky Sport Italia.
“We can’t be made to feel guilty for contracting the virus, as our job involves contact sport and travel, so it can happen to anyone.
“They were difficult days and while I was accustomed to physically having to get back on track after an injury, mentally this was a different experience entirely.
“I was scared. There is the fear of not being well, of infecting your loved ones, because being a football player at that point is not your first concern. You are not an ill player, but an ill person who feels fragile.”
Genoa return to the field tomorrow evening against Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi, although some of their players are still out of action.
“We must be ready to help each other out. There are some who aren’t at 100 per cent and that’s when the leaders must step up.”
