Filippo Inzaghi has defended Gianluca Caprari who was sent off in Benevento’s 3-1 defeat against Verona.

The former Sampdoria striker verbally abused one of the referee’s assistants after Benevento had not been awarded a penalty kick in the second half.

“Caprari was a bit nervous,” Inzaghi told Sky Sport.

“He was wrong to say certain things, but they [the referees] should act as nothing happened, as they do many times.

“I am sorry because we’ll have him out for a few games now.

“These are games to win. If it does not happen it is our demerit. We must however maintain confidence and courage.

"It’s hard to comment this game," Inzaghi continued.

“We faced a strong team but we failed many goal chances. We must improve because otherwise we throw away games won. We concede a goal every time we receive a shot. We must improve in this.

“Marco Silvestri made great saves, he deserves the national team.

“The game ended after the red card.

“From the pitch there was a certain noise and Caprari complained.

“There was a contact in the penalty area and the referee had to whistle the foul in our favor.

“All the players stopped to play, then the VAR could overturn the decision but from the pitch it was a clear penalty.”
