The Lega Serie B announced that VAR will be used in the competition from the second half of the 2020-21 season.

Although VAR is now a firm fixture for Serie A, it had only been used in the Serie B promotion and relegation play-offs last term.

Following complaints from clubs and changes to the contract with technology provider Hawk Eye, it was announced this evening that the Lega Serie B will introduce VAR for the second half of this season.

Following complaints from clubs and changes to the contract with technology provider Hawk Eye, it was announced this evening that the Lega Serie B will introduce VAR for the second half of this season.

“It is an epochal decision that makes our tournament even more modern and in line with the needs of our fans and partners,” said Lega Serie B President Mauro Balata.

“I thank the clubs and my collaborators for their efforts over the last few months, also overcoming obstacles provoked by the terrible pandemic we are all subjected to.”

However, because of the growing COVID-19 crisis in Italy, the Primavera 2 tournament – for Serie B youth teams – has been suspended.
