Italy hit a sobering milestone on November 11, reaching one million positive COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic in February.

The first case on Italian soil was identified on February 20 and the Peninsula became the first European country to be hit hard by what would later become a global pandemic.

Today the number of total positive tests, including those who recovered or who died, reached 1,028,424.

There were 623 deaths over the last 24 hours, with an extra 110 people admitted to intensive care, meaning there are now 3,081 in the ICU.

Since yesterday, another 32,961 people tested positive for COVID-19 out of 225,640 swabs, so 14.6 per cent of those tested proved to be positive.

That is a slight drop from 16.1 per cent on Tuesday.

Since the start of the crisis, 42,953 people in Italy have died after testing positive for COVID-19.
