Domagoj Vida was told he was positive for COVID during the half-time of Turkey-Croatia with several Serie A players who were onto the pitch.
"After that all the players and staff members had had negative tests on Monday before the game against Turkey, new checks were carried out on Wednesday morning, ahead of the game against Sweden,” Croatia’s official statement reads.
“The Federation received the test results after midnight local time and these showed Domagoj Vida is positive for Covid.
“The medical staff of the Croatian national team received the first information of a potentially positive result during the half time.”
Vida was replaced during the half time break but the Croatian federation insists he would have been subbed off anyway.
Several Serie A players took part to the game.
Milan Badelj (Genoa), Marko Rog (Cagliari) and Mario Pasalice (Atalanta) had been playing in the first half while Inter’s Ivan Perisic and Juventus’ Merih Demiral were subbed in in the second half.
Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) and Hakan Calhanoglu (Milan) remained on the bench for the whole game.
