The Neroverdi have been the surprise package of the Serie A season so far and sit in second place, still unbeaten.

This form has also seen their talents make it to the Italy team, with Locatelli impressing in the Nations League victories over Poland and the Netherlands.

“Locatelli’s growth has been exponential, he is ready to play at the highest level and take the Nazionale by the hand,” De Zerbi told La Repubblica newspaper.

“I saw him play against Holland and he dominated Wijnaldum, someone who won the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool.

“At this moment, he is the best midfielder in Italy and still has ample margin for improvement.”

De Zerbi also showered praise on Sassuolo winger Boga, who has attracted attention from numerous clubs within Italy, France, England and Spain.

“When Boga arrived, he didn’t know how to deal with his teammates or frankly with the goal, but when it comes to taking men on one-on-one, I’d say Messi is better and after that I’d really have to think about it.”
