Beppe Bergomi has confirmed he will never return to Inter and has revealed which Tottenham player the Nerazzurri should have signed instead of Christian Eriksen.

Bergomi, a 1982 Italy World cup winner, is one of Inter’s most iconic players ever having played 757 games with the Nerazzurri. He is now working as a pundit on Sky Italia.

“I always say the same things: I have my team in my heart, but I work for a TV that lives on subscriptions,” he told Radio Nerazzurra.

“They do market researches, when you sign a contract you have to go there with your knowledge, being as impartial as possible.

“Even criticism is always made in a constructive way, it’s impossible to satisfy everyone. Last year I followed Atalanta, I had a great time but no one noticed it.

“If I’m talking about Inter and Juventus, there are problems, the company knows it but I know what’s in my heart.

"The last person who tried [to take me to Inter] was [Walter] Sabatini," Bergomi continued.

"I also told him about the misunderstandings of the past, which always arised from my work as a pundit.

“He finally told me there was no chance, so I made my peace. I am done with it. Giacinto Facchetti tried even more but there was nothing to do".

The former Italy defender suggested Christian Eriksen may have not been the best possible signing for the Nerazzurri.

“The system is having quite an impact on him. It can't be changed because it provides two strikers who are Inter's strenght.

"For me, Eriksen is a 'sub leader'", he continued.

"Someone who needs to feel involved otherwise he struggles. But honestly I would have taken Son or [Harry] Kane from Tottenham, not Eriksen. Son would do very well at Inter.

"When I was a footballer I had to deal with [Dennis] Bergkamp, the club asked me to help him to settle in.

"I was going out with him and his wife, I tried to teach him Italian but his wife learned it and he didn’t.

“If Eriksen proves to be fit, I’m the first one to be happy. Inter said it was a market opportunity, but did [Antonio] Conte wanted him? We’ll never know.”

Speaking about the past, Bergomi did also reveal the best players he played with and discussed the Calciopoli scandal.

“Ronaldo was the player with the fastest speed technique I’ve ever seen. We knew he was unmarkable. I’ve never seen a player like him. The strongest ever for me was [Lothar] Matthaus because he had that winning mentality, but Ronaldo was extraordinary.

“I did not live the Calciopoli years, but even in 1998 you could feel that something was not right in the system.

“Juventus were so strong that it could win even in a different way. I’ll stop here.”
