The 29-year-old has played six competitive games in 2020-21 and has yet to start in Serie A this term.

Despite the lack of playing time under Gattuso, the Algeria international has praised the new coach for fixing a ‘mentally broken’ Napoli side.

“We were mentally broken, what a job Gattuso has done,” Ghoulam told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. “He’s offering fun football, very attacking.

“Mentally we were in pieces and he made us feel good. We had to interpret the matches better, score points and move forward.

“Gattuso did a great job.”

Ghoulam remembers the years under Maurizio Sarri and said the main ‘difference’ has been the lack of ‘continuity’ but stressed the Neapolitans ‘talk too much about’ the time with Sarri.

“The differences between Sarri’s years and now, is that we had much more continuity. Everything passes through matches like the one on Sunday, useful for gaining confidence.

“We know what the coach wants from us. The team is large, we have many quality players. We must carry out our task, move forward in all competitions and we will see what happes.

“We talk too much about the Sarri years, they have passed, we must move on.”
