“Smalling and Veretout won’t take part, as they are not ready. Smalling trained with the team today, hopefully he can get back to playing next week,” explained the coach in his press conference.

“We’ll see about Federico Fazio and Marash Kumbulla tomorrow, but they were out for a while and aren’t in the best shape. The truth is, we don’t have many centre-backs right now.”

Sassuolo lost their first game of the season last week, but remain in second place on 18 points.

“Both Roma and Sassuolo are two attack-minded teams. I really like Roberto De Zerbi’s style of football, which is focused on the attack and controlling the match. It’s going to be difficult, especially as Sassuolo have won four away games already. They absolutely deserve to be in their current position.”

With Veretout out of action, Fonseca confirmed two out of Lorenzo Pellegrini, Gonzalo Villar and Amadou Diawara will start in midfield tomorrow.

Riccardo Calafiori captured headlines and hearts after his stunning debut goal against Young Boys in the Europa League on Thursday.

“Calafiori is a young player with talent, but he needs time to grow. Suddenly treating him like he’s the best in the world right now is not helpful for the player. We trust he’ll have a great future.”
