Paulo Fonseca admits ‘there were quite a few things I didn’t like’ about the 3-1 defeat to CSKA Sofia. Roma ‘mustn’t repeat these errors.’

The Giallorossi were already sure of top spot in the Europa League group, so rested their star names and gave debuts to three 18-year-olds.

However, while Tommaso Milanese scored his first goal, the costly errors in defence were made by ‘veterans’ Amadou Diawara and Federico Fazio.

“We lost and there were quite a few things I didn’t like about the performance, but we also had a lot of reasons for that,” Fonseca told Sky Sport Italia.

“Our opponents proved to be clinical in attack, because they made the most of two bad errors to score two goals. They then defended in numbers and it was difficult to create many scoring opportunities, but the important thing is we mustn’t repeat these errors.

“It was not easy for the young players. It’s still a Europa League fixture and that brings with it responsibility, but they did well. I am pleased for them.”

Roma now go into the draw for the Europa League Round of 32, and as group winners, should avoid the biggest clubs.

“We want to keep going in this tournament. It becomes more difficult from here on in, but they are all strong, so we’ll see who we get.”
