After thousands flocked to pay their respects at Vicenza’s Stadio Menti, Paolo Rossi’s funeral is being transmitted live on Italian television.
The 1982 World Cup winner, Ballon d’Or and Golden Boot passed away on Wednesday at the age of 64.
He had been ill for some time, but had kept the extent of his condition secret from even the closest friends and former teammates.
Rossi’s coffin was inside the Stadio Romeo Menti in Vicenza, allowing thousands of fans to pay their respects in the arena where he first found great success as a player.
It was then carried into the Duomo di Vicenza cathedral by some of his 1982 World Cup teammates.
At the entrance, rather than simply a picture of Rossi, there is a large replica of the Gazzetta dello Sport front page after that legendary 1982 World Cup victory.
The funeral is transmitted live on RAI television.
