Roma coach Paulo Fonseca confirmed Pedro Rodriguez will play against Cagliari tomorrow and reassured Chris Smalling can play in the current formation.

The Giallorossi aim to bounce back after a 4-1 defeat to Atalanta last time and the Portuguese coach revealed he will make changes ahead of the last game in 2020.

“I’ll make some changes tomorrow, we have played many games now,” Fonseca said at a press conference.

“In order to win, I’ll make some changes.”

Fonseca confirmed Pedro will be back against the Casteddu and could give chances to Calafiori, Marash Kumbulla or Gonzalo Villar.

“Let’s see tomorrow, but some of these will play. Pedro will play tomorrow, he has no physical problems.”

Paulo Fonseca said Smalling can continue in the back-three and said he is not forced to change formation for the English defender, before confirming that Leonardo Spinazzola misses out.

“It’s normal that Chris is not at his best right now, he has recently returned,” Fonseca said. “He’s improving.

“These questions of having Smalling in a back-three, it’s not ture that it’s not going well. He has played there many times and also well.

“Spinazzola is not well, he won’t be there.”

Fonseca expects a ‘difficult’ game against Eusebio Di Francesco’s men.

“It’s a difficult game, like all of them. It’s a game we want to win,” he continued.

“Cagliari are a good team, who want the ball and are good on the counter. We want to win and play well.”

La Lupa have conceded 13 times in the second half and 18 in total, but Fonseca stressed the Giallorossi are focused on improving in general and said he trusts both his goalkeepers.

“We can’t make this assessment in a general way. We have to do it match by match,” he said. “If we think of Napoli and Atalanta, this is true.

“But we work to improve our defensive performance throughout the matches. When we make a mistake, we all make mistakes and I’m the main culprit.

“I have faith in both goalkeepers.”
