With the arrival of new coach Davide Ballardini, Genoa are expected to transform in January, including Medhi Benatia and the return of Lasse Schone.

The Grifone sacked Rolando Maran to bring in Ballardini, who debuted with a 2-1 victory away to Spezia on December 23.

His style is very different to that of Maran and there are likely to be big changes in the squad come January.

The easiest to implement is the return of a player who is already on their books, but was frozen out over the summer.

The Gazzetta dello Sport suggests former Ajax midfielder Schone could be brought back into the Genoa group for the first time this season.

As for a more traditional transfer, La Repubblica newspaper points towards former Roma and Juventus defender Benatia.

He is currently in Qatar with Al-Duhail, but at age 33, the Morocco international still has plenty to give.
