The first questions inevitably involved the financial stability of the club, as owners Suning are in negotiations with BC Partners to sell up to 40 per cent of their shares.

“Inter are one of the most important clubs in the world. There was a certain transition period, we want to get back to where Inter belong, and the title Derby d’Italia means a great deal for a prestigious fixture.

“Our duty is to give our all, with the aim of also getting a great result,” the director told Sky Sport Italia.

“I can reassure everyone that we are working to ensure consistency for every employee, it is absolutely not an emergency situation. I can’t give a full rundown of the situation, but Inter are, have been and will be one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Antonio Conte is up against his old club, although Marotta was not present for the pre-match team talk.

“We saw the intensity of the work done in training, how the match was prepared, and are confident it’ll be a great game of football.

“Naturally, motivation is important in sport and there’s no lack of it here. This is still an intermediary game in the process of the season, so of course all our fans want to celebrate and see their team play beautiful, effective football, but there are many games still to be played and the big risks are slipping up in lesser fixtures.

“So this game can have a significance in the season, but it is far from decisive.”

Marotta was asked if Christian Eriksen could go out on loan, and if so, will he be replaced considering the financial situation at Inter?

“Piero Ausilio is working on the Eriksen case and as soon as there is something concrete to report, we’ll tell you.

“We received some indications and guidelines from the club, so we cannot make any investments and should not expect important developments.

“The group should be respected for the work done and achievements made."
