Lorenzo Insigne was in tears after missing a penalty kick against Juventus, but Rino Gattuso said he ‘should not feel responsible for the defeat.’
The winger took a penalty kick Dries Mertens had earned for a Weston McKennie foul after 80 minutes. He sent Szczesny the wrong way,but put the spot-kick wide.
The Old Lady were already up one goal and eventually won the game 2-0 with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata.
Insigne left the pitch in tears, but Gattuso reassured him during the post-match press conference.
“Lorenzo should not feel responsible. One can miss penalty kicks, I am the first responsible for the defeat. It’s not his fault if we lost the game,” the Napoli coach said.
“It hurts to see him cry, he could have scored his 100th goal and send the game to extra time, but these things happen in football. Maradona and Pelé missed some penalties too sometimes.”
