Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora admits it is ‘unlikely’ Serie A stadiums will be open to fans during this season.
We are nearing a year since the lockdown was imposed in March 2020, as the first Italian – and indeed European – case of COVID-19 was confirmed on February 20, 2020.
“I think it’s unlikely we’ll see the stadiums opened up again during this season,” Spadafora told Titolo V on RAI Tre.
“Having an elevated number of people all moving in one direction is very complicated in the current conditions. The latest Government decree expires in March, but I think before anything else, we must focus first on keeping sport going, then we can eventually consider partially reopening the arenas.”
It was hoped the vaccine rollout would allow for people who have had the jabs to be given access to sporting events.
However, the process has been slower than expected in Italy.
