The coach said he expected ‘great things’ from the former Tottenham player in the playmaker position, but it was after the goal against local rivals Milan in the quarter-final that sparked reports about his stay in the fashion capital.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a return to the Premier League in recent weeks, in addition to a possible reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain in France.
But after the winner in the derby, the newspaper claimed Inter are not considering a sale this winter and that Eriksen has eventually convinced Conte.
But the Denmark international has become a talking point again after Conte’s press conference ahead of the match against Benevento in Serie A.
The coach first quashed reports of him asking for a move for Roma forward Edin Dzeko, before he said Eriksen can’t play just because of his set-piece qualities.
“In rugby, there are players who come off the bench for set pieces,” Conte said and smiled. “We are hoping Christian can help us in different situations too.
“He can be an extra weapon for us, but a player can’t only stay on the pitch for the free kicks.”
Sky Sport Italia reported yesterday that Eriksen should get another chance in the starting line-up against Benevento tomorrow, but the comment from Conte seems like another warning for the former Ajax star.
