Braga coach Carlos Carvalhal complained that his team ‘deserved a better referee’ after the 2-0 Europa League home defeat to Roma.

The Giallorossi had two goals disallowed using VAR, while Ricardo Esgaio was sent off for a second bookable offence.

“My players were stoic this evening,” the coach told Sport TV in Portugal.

“We were caught cold by the early goal, but stayed in the game and then had three or four scoring opportunities. It was the same in the second half until the red card.

“My players were brilliant, there were two great teams on the pitch today. Having said that, the referee was overall terrible. This game deserved a better referee and his assistants.

“I felt like we forced Roma to play defensively and we knew where the spaces were, not allowing them many counter-attacks. We did what we needed to do, but should’ve been more focused on the final pass.

“There is a second leg to be played and we will try to achieve what right now seems impossible.”
