Gaetano Castrovilli came off the bench to turn the game around for the Viola and Italiano felt Spezia were punished for not having scored during the first 45 minutes.

“We could have done more in the first half, in which we played the game,” Italiano said at the post-match press conference.

“Then in the second half we conceded goals and were unable to react.

“When these games get complicated, it’s hard to get them back on track. Spezia did what they had to do, keeping the game in hand.

The coach was sad to see the setback after back-to-back wins against Sassuolo and Milan in recent weeks, but vowed to ‘start again’.

“I’m sorry the positive run ended, but we will start again,” he said. “We weren’t pungent like on other occasions.

“If you put these teams in difficulty then they struggle to find goals. Today, we approached the game in a great way, pushing Fiorentina down.

“The only mistake was not scoring. For Spezia to come here and command the game, I think it’s a merit."
