Luis Muriel is in the form of his life and confident Atalanta can shock Real Madrid in the Champions League. ‘If we give our all and believe in ourselves, we can beat anyone.’
The first leg of the Round of 16 kicks off on Wednesday at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.
“Playing against Real Madrid is always prestigious and I am enjoying this moment,” smiled the Colombia international in his press conference.
“The only way to put in a great performance is to give it everything we’ve got. We beat Sevilla 3-2 at home by playing a great game in a moment when they were in excellent shape.
“If we give our all and believe in ourselves and our own characteristics, we can beat anyone. If we play the way we know how, then we can compete at the highest levels.”
While Atalanta already surprised everyone in their first ever Champions League campaign, coming within minutes of knocking PSG out in the quarter-final, Real Madrid have been stuttering so far this season both in Europe and domestically.
Muriel was asked if Atalanta felt they could cause an upset against the Merengues?
“Watching their most recent games, we’d be mad not to. We have to keep our eyes open and understand that Real Madrid don’t stop being a great team even if they have a lot of injuries.
“Their history is clear, when they don’t play well in La Liga, that’s when they step up and pull something out of the hat in the Champions League.”
Unfortunately, there won’t be any fans at the Gewiss Stadium to witness this historic encounter.
“It takes so much away from us and the fans, as they saw the team through years of challenging for far less prestigious targets, it’s a pity not to have them with us right now.”
