On this day, three years ago, Davide Astori died from cardiac arrest on the morning of Fiorentina’s Serie A match against Udinese. ‘He was a special boy and is always with us’.
In the 13th minute of Serie A Week 25, the former Italy international’s picture was projected in the all the stadiums and play stopped to pay tribute to the former Fiorentina defender.
Milan coach Stefano Pioli was in charge of Fiorentina at the time, when the Viola captain died in his sleep in the team hotel ahead of the match against the Friuli on March 4, 2018.
“Sometimes coincidences make these moments strange,” Pioli said at the post-match press conference after Milan’s 1-1 draw with Udinese last night.
“Even three years ago, we had to play against Udinese. They say everything passes over time, but this is not the case for those who met Davide.
“He was a special boy and is always with us.”
Astori – who would have turned 34 in January – represented Italy on 14 occasions, helping them finish third at the 2013 Confederations Cup.
The centre-back played 289 Serie A games, including spells with Cagliari and Fiorentina.
