Alberto Gilardino is confident he can win back his place in the Italy squad for Euro 2012. “Cesare Prandelli knows what I can give.”

The striker has struggled for form first at Fiorentina and now with his January move to Genoa, while he missed a month due to injury.

“I feel a bit better after that thigh strain,” he told Tuttosport. “I am very happy in Genoa and it feels like I’ve been here for a lifetime. I’m certain it won’t take much to take the club back to the top level.

“Fiorentina represent a wonderful time in my life, but after some great seasons without squad rotation it got tough. When I face them, it will certainly be an emotional moment.”

Genoa take on Roma on Monday night and Gila reveals he was very close to wearing their jersey.

“I almost joined the Giallorossi before my move to Milan. It was very pleasing to receive a phone call from Francesco Totti saying he wanted me at the club.”

Gilardino has seen his name drop down the Italy rankings and it remains to be seen whether he’ll even receive a call-up for Euro 2012.

“I have 11 Serie A games left to convince Prandelli and up to this point I will admit I’ve been inconsistent, but the Coach knows what I can give.

“If I am not called, then I will reflect carefully on the reasons and the mistakes I made. I’m sure Italy can be protagonists in Poland and Ukraine.”
