Atalanta full-back Robin Gosens said he was close to joining Schalke last year and explained what happened when he asked Cristiano Ronaldo for his shirt.
The left-back has never hidden his desire for a return to the German Bundesliga and said in his autobiography called ‘It’s Worth Dreaming’, that he was close to moving to his ‘favourite club’ last year.
“I knew exactly what I wanted,” Gosens writes, according to SportItalia. “Going to Schalke would not only make my Bundesliga dream come true, I would also play for my favourite club.
“And, above all, I would return to live in Germany.
“A message arrived from Gelsenkirchen on the day of the celebrations for the Champions League qualification: ‘Hello Robin, would you be interested in the S04 topic? David Wagned will contact your agent on Monday. Happy celebrations tonight! Glückauf, Michael Reschke.
“I was incredibly happy. The conditions were perfect, but unfortunately nothing has changed. Atalanta didn’t want to let me go under any circumstances.”
Gosens also reveals how Juventus forward Ronaldo turned him down when he asked for his shirt at the end of their match against Juventus.
“After the match against Juventus, I tried to make my dream of having Ronaldo’s shirt come true,” Gosens said.
“After the final whistle, I went to him, I didn’t even go to the audience to celebrate… but Ronaldo didn’t accept. I asked him: ‘Cristiano, can I have your shirt?’
“He didn’t even look at me, he just said: ‘No!’
“I was completely blushed and ashamed. I went away and I felt small. You know that moment when something embarrassing happens and you look around to see if anyone has noticed it? That’s how I felt, and I tried to hide it.”
