Atalanta midfielder Matteo Pessina tested positive for COVID, meaning there are now eight Italy internationals who caught the virus while on international duty.

“Atalanta announce that following the latest round of swab tests underwent yesterday, on Tuesday, April 6, Matteo Pessina tested positive for COVID,” La Dea’s official statement reads.

“The player is asymptomatic and has been placed in isolation. The club has activated all the procedures provided by the current protocol and informed the Authorities of the related processes.”

The FIGC announced four staff members tested positive for COVID last week, after the Azzurri’s 2-0 win against Lithuania.

Leonardo Bonucci, Federico Bernardeschi, Alessio Cragno, Alessandro Florenzi, Marco Verratti, Vincenzo Grifo and Salvatore Sirigu have then tested positive upon their return from international duty.

Therefore, Pessina is the eighth Italy international to test positive for Coronavirus after the last international break.
