The Viola certainly put up a valiant effort, as Dusan Vlahovic’s double cancelled out a Duvan Zapata brace, but Lucas Martinez Quarta’s handling offence allowed Josip Ilicic to convert the decisive penalty.

“We didn’t start the way we wanted to and Atalanta did well to make the most of dead ball situations,” Iachini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We also weren’t lucky on the very tight offside decision and the handball for the penalty. However, we had the right spirit in the second half, got it back to 2-2 and at that moment we really had the feeling we could go and win it, then the penalty happened. It’s a regret.

“Vlahovic had already scored six or seven important goals last season, we knew he was still maturing and he is getting into shape now.”

Iachini was asked about the defending on the corner, as Duvan Zapata easily out-jumped Giacomo Bonaventura for the goal.

“We do zonal marking and should’ve gone a bit further forward to get the ball at the near post, but a goal can happen.

“The important thing now is to rediscover the defensive solidity we had last season, to bring home decisive points for our Serie A safety. We’ve been working on it for two weeks.

“The fact remains, in football you need to score goals and not concede them.”
