Vincenzo Italiano saw a lack of consistency and experience in Spezia during their 2-0 defeat to Genoa. ‘Staying in Serie A for another season would resolve many issues.’

The team held Inter to a 1-1 draw in midweek, yet fell 2-0 at Marassi in this relegation dogfight.

“One of our problems at the moment is that we are inconsistent, we can’t maintain the same concentration we saw against Inter just a few days ago,” Italiano told Sky Sport Italia.

“One of our problems at the moment is that we are inconsistent, we can’t maintain the same concentration we saw against Inter just a few days ago,” Italiano told Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s difficult, because if we don’t have the right determination and aggression for a game like this, naturally we’re going to struggle against a team that is already stronger.

“It would be fundamental for Spezia to stay in the top flight, to get used to the tempo and level, to increase their experience. I recognise some of the errors, as they are what I did in my first years as a Serie A player.

“I am convinced that staying in Serie A for another season would resolve many of these issues and give us the belief that we belong here.”

This was the sixth consecutive away defeat for Spezia, who have really struggled outside the Stadio Picco.

“We had three or four chances that could’ve been dealt with differently today. If you don’t take your chances, and concede a goal cheaply, it becomes tricky.

“We knew from the start that Spezia would go down to the wire for a place in Serie A and we’ve always been prepared for that eventuality.”
