Joe Barone explains why Fiorentina didn’t request sanctions for breakaway Super League clubs and warns Dusan Vlahovic who has been linked with Milan and Roma.

“The coach is Beppe Iachini. We’ll see next season, but the important thing is to finish the campaign well. Vlahovic has a contract and contracts are to be respected. Then we’ll work with Vlahovic and his agents, when we have news, we’ll tell you,” Fiorentina general manager Barone told Sky Sport before their home clash against Juve.

“This is a fixture that everyone at Fiorentina cares about, especially the fans. We prepared well and the only thing we are missing today is the crowd, because this is such a passionate game and we need to defend Italian football and its fans,” Barone added.

The Super League coup sparked controversy and even fury around the world, but Fiorentina did not sign on to the letter from 11 Serie A clubs demanding sanctions for rebel clubs Juventus, Inter and Milan.

“Apart from rumours in recent years of people working on the Super League, the announcement was a surprise to everyone in football. Our President and Fiorentina have taken a position, which is we want it in writing from all clubs that it can never happen again.

“Every league has to grow itself, where there is rivalry built over decades of domestic football. The Lega Serie A issues are different to the Super League questions.

“We don’t own newspapers, so we can’t make jokes or a campaign about it, but we can make our position known and we want reform in Italian football. We need to talk about agents, the salary cap that is so sorely needed, because three teams at the moment have huge debts and very high wages.

“We need a reset in Serie A and Fiorentina want to be part of that work.”
