“It’s true that this is an important match for us, not just for Roma, but also Italian football,” the Portuguese director told Sky Sport Italia in his first ever interview in Italian.

“We expect a difficult game, but we are here to get a good result. We mustn’t forget it is just the first leg of two in this round and we’re all concentrated on getting a strong result for Roma so we can make history with this club.”

Even though they are in a Europa League semi-final, it’s widely reported Roma will part company with Paulo Fonseca to bring in Maurizio Sarri next season.

“Paulo has always been a great professional who is working hard for Roma. We all know this is not the day to think about the future, it’s the day to focus on the next 90 minutes.

“Paulo is a leader here and he wants us concentrated.”
