Lazio have reportedly targeted a free transfer for Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata this summer.

La Repubblica reports sporting director Igli Tare wants to give coach Simone Inzaghi a creative midfielder to increase the value of the squad.

The report claims the Aquile have contacted the Spanish playmaker and offered him a two-year contract at the Olimpico, with an option of a further season.

The Biancocelesti have, according to the report, offered Mata a deal worth €4m a season, but the Spaniard is asking for €5m a year to accept a move to Formello.

The 33-year-old, capped 41 times by Spain, has only played seven games in the Premier League this term, but the former Real Madrid youth has experience from stints with Valencia, Chelsea and the Red Devils.
