“I’ll be able to look back over what I achieved tomorrow and we hope to still finish seventh,” said the coach in his press conference.
“My staff and I are grateful to Sassuolo, the players, everyone who works here and the people of the city. It’s a shame we weren’t able to share the last 18 months with them in the stadium and that we are leaving now with an empty arena.
“I gave my all with passion, putting the results as secondary to good football and doing the best for these players. I inherited a fine team that knew what it meant to work hard, so I just tried to add my ideas and vision of football that goes beyond tactics. It’s about what it means to these fans, the privilege we must feel at doing this for a living.
“The team evolved over these three years and can now play with a few different tactical systems. It has a strong mentality and takes everyone on, showing no fear or timidity against the bigger clubs. At the same time, it maintains the humility to fight it out with those sides who are trying to avoid relegation, not afraid to get down and dirty when needed.”
