Josip Ilicic’s agent has again defended his player’s recent form and this time has a new reason for the decline suffered: “The Press is very biased against him.”

Ilicic has been hit by a significant downturn in confidence on the pitch, has lost his place in Bortolo Mutti’s starting line-up and is regularly whistled by his own fans if he makes a mistake.

“He’s definitely not like last year,” reflected Amir Ruznic to ilsussidiario.net on Friday.

“But [his decline] seems natural and physiological for a young player. Last year he had a wonderful season, this year a little less.”

Ruznic argued that the player’s form isn’t that bad, in light of his goal-scoring record this season – six scored across the League, Cup and Europa League preliminary round – is comparable with last season.

“You cannot criticise a player like Ilicic. Those who do not understand much about football do.

“Six goals are especially important for an attacking midfielder, because we must not forget that Ilicic is not a striker. I think that the Press is very biased against the boy.”

The 24-year-old is still linked with a summer switch away from the Rosanero.

“We have had no contact with anyone, whilst he knows that talking about the transfer market at this time would be counterproductive for him. He wants to finish the season well.”
