Cesare Prandelli said Italy “deserved to win, as we played better than well, had patience and above all ideas” against England.

The Azzurri dominated the quarter-final, but hit the woodwork twice and squandered chances to only reach the semi-final on penalties.

“We played a great game and deserved to win. We did better than well, had patience and created chances, while on penalties you do need a bit of luck,” said the Coach.

“We played with heart and character, but above all with ideas tonight against a team that made it difficult for us.

“I want to praise the team, our spirit, as we played well and also did well to stop England going on the counter. In the end they went for the long ball only and that too was closed down easily.”

Now Italy face Germany in the semi-final, who won all their games so far, including in qualifying.

“Germany are absolutely the favourites, but let us enjoy 10 minutes first and then we’ll think about Germany.”
