Claudio Marchisio reveals he was one of the designated penalty takers, but was not fit enough to step up against England.

“I was meant to be one of the penalty takers, but I ended the match with cramp and so told the Coach if someone else was in better shape then they ought to step up.”

Claudio Marchisio reveals he was one of the designated penalty takers, but was not fit enough to step up against England.

“I was meant to be one of the penalty takers, but I ended the match with cramp and so told the Coach if someone else was in better shape then they ought to step up.”

Italy did eventually win 4-2 in the shoot-out to reach the semi-final after dominating 120 minutes without finding the net.

“It was really tough, as these extra time matches feel like they go on forever, but we faced a difficult opponent and dominated the match. I think at the end of the day the penalties sent the right team through.”

The semi-final is on Thursday against favourites Germany, who won their quarter-final against Greece two days ago.

“Now we have gone through and think about the fact Germany have two extra days to rest, we know that winning within the 90 minutes was a better idea.

“In any case, we’re here now and have to make the best of it.”
